Looking for inspiration for your next trip? If choosing a holiday destination also depends on how beautiful the scenery is, Farawayfurniture.com has decided to make it easier for those social-media dependent users to make a decision by compiling a list of the most Instagrammed locations in the world.
The research was carried out on small towns and villages, the most suitable places to plan an escape from everyday life, to immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and – for those who can't help it – to post amazing photographs that make all followers die of envy.
The top 20 list compiled through the hashtag count collected on February 13, 2020, reserves for us Italians a couple of surprises – but we’re not that surprised really.
The first good news? We don't have to go too far to discover the most photographed villages on the planet: 15% of the most Instagrammed towns on the planet are in fact in Italy, with almost 4 million hashtags. After all, Italy is one of the most loved countries abroad because of its characteristic villages, unique places where you can breathe history, culture and beauty.

With the highest percentage of posts, we could only place ourselves at the top of the ranking. Winning overall and sundry is the Cinque Terre of Liguria, UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the traditional and idealistic lifestyle that has allowed a harmonious symbiosis between man and nature: Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, five fishing villages that extend across more than 6 miles of coastline, where the sea and mountains merge. And, not surprisingly, enjoy delicious seafood specialties. The research has counted 2,049,711 hashtags for Cinque Terre, but this is not the only surprise for Italy which is the only country with as many as three spots in the top 20.
Ranked in fourth place there is Burano, an island in the Venice lagoon that has gained more than 1 million photos on Instagram thanks to the colors of its picturesque houses, the handmade lacework, and the typical buranei bussolemen.
In seventh place out pops the trulli of Alberobello in Apulia: no wonder these ancient and iconic buildings, listed as UNESCO World Heritage are so Instagrammed to earn a place in the ranking.
