It’s the eve of the big night in which match point will play out in the waters of the Pacific Ocean. More specifically, the mythical Gulf of Hauraki, on New Zealand’s north coast where the most challenging America's Cup regattas take place. At 4:00 p.m. NZST on March 17, 2021, the horn will blare, signaling the start of the final leg of the competition between Italy’s Luna Rossa and New Zealand, the current titleholders.

We spoke to Francesco Bruni, the Luna Rossa's skipper, about how he and the Luna Rossa team fuel up in Auckland. We certainly know what they drink, given that the team’s sparkling partner is Cantine Ferrari.
What do you eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?
"My diet is quite varied. Though I do confess that I’m a big eater of pasta."
How do you describe your diet?
“I love fish and I try to eat vegetables as much as possible so as not to gain weight, which wouldn’t be a good thing on a boat.”
How much do you like Italian cuisine?
“A lot, a lot. I also appreciate foods from other countries but I’m especially inclined toward Italian cuisine.”
What’s the food that helps you win?
"The pieces of Parmigiano we eat between regattas."
The best remedy for seasickness?
"Parmigiano and prosciutto work very well."

What does the team eat? Who prepares your meals?
“We have a team of exceptional Sardinian chefs who prepare all the classics, even an excellent risotto creamed in the form of cheese.”
What are you looking forward to tasting when you return home?
“As soon as I'm back in my Sicily, I'd like a nice brioche with gelato and cream.”
Who is the Luna Rossa team's best cook?
“Certainly Michele Cannoni, who is in his second America's Cup. He gets along very well in the kitchen. And also my son Ubaldo, who is here in Auckland, but not on the team."
What do you always carry in your suitcase with you?
“A bottle of passata di Pomodoro [a particular tomato sauce that's thicker than purée]. It’s unique, impossible to find elsewhere, and magical."
