On the eve of an important election and the 100th year of women’s right to vote, there’s no better way to celebrate than by cooking up an Italian dish from the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and legal luminaries like Attorney Amal Clooney.
Leading up to 1920, suffragettes in America published at least a half-dozen cookbooks to further the cause. The tradition continues in a new cookbook, Nineteenth Amendment Centennial Cookbook: 100 Recipes for 100 Years, created by the American Bar Association.
The cookbook includes a Vitello Tonnato recipe written by RGB’s spouse and several takes on pasta from other families. An accomplished amateur chef and obsessive recipe tester, Martin Ginsberg prepared elaborate dishes for spousal luncheons at the Supreme Court, and of course, his brilliant wife. The cookbook features more than one of his recipes, which is available for free download.
For devoted fans of RGB, Martin’s recipe was taken from Chef Supreme: Martin Ginsberg, a cookbook started by Martha-Ann Alito in remembrance of Martin, who passed away in 2010. In an interview with NPR, Martha-Ann described his approach to recipes as “very exacting and precise.”
