Apple Bundles with Almonds and Hazelnuts

Thaw the puff pastry. Meanwhile, peel the apples, cut them in half and slice each half into thin slices. Place the sliced apples on a buttered baking dish, sprinkle with granulated sugar and small bits of butter, then run it under the broiler for a few minutes. Mince the almonds and hazelnuts together, not overly fine, with 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, then mix the nuts with the custard to form a thick filling. Roll out the puff pastry 1 inch thick, pierce it with a roller, then cut it into 8 equal rectangles. Remove the apples from the oven, let them cool, then lift the apple slices with a spatula and set them on the pastry rectangles. Evenly distribute the filling over the fruit, then roll them into bundles, folding the uncovered part of the dough over the apples. Brush the bundles with beaten egg, sprinkle with powdered sugar, set them on a baking tray and bake at 375°F for about 20 minutes. Serve warm.
